Principal’s Message

Dear Parents,

The Wading River staff and I would like to welcome you and your child(ren) to a new school year. The information below describes procedures and regulations that you will need for the upcoming school year.

FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL: Wednesday, September 3, 2008

SCHOOL HOURS: 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

There is no supervision before 8:50 a.m. Children should not arrive at school earlier than this time.

BUS TRANSPORTATION & SAFETY: All children should take the bus to and from school. A bus schedule to choose the bus stop nearest your home is enclosed. We are unable to allow a student to go home on a different bus without a written permission note, signed by the parent, which must be given to the teacher at the start of the school day. Please do not call the office during the school day to change bus stops . Bus changes may cause an overloading on the buses; therefore, I would ask that a bus change only be made when absolutely necessary. Play dates, parties, etc. are not considered necessary.

IMPORTANT - Please Note: There will be no late buses this school year. However, the early a.m. buses will continue. Also, if you pick your child up at the end of the school day, please be sure to sign him/her out at the main office or with the staff member on bus duty at the north end of the school.

DROP OFF ZONE: Use of the drop off zone on the south side of the south parking lot is required when it is necessary to bring a student to school by private automobile. *No parking or standing is permitted along the drop off zone. Students should exit onto the sidewalk from the passenger side of the automobile. Also, please be aware that NYS law prohibits passing school buses when their flashing red lights are on. Parents are also reminded not to cross between parked school buses at any time.

VISITORS: In order to protect student safety, all visitors, including parents, must check in with the front door monitor or with the front office upon entering school. When it is necessary for a parent to deliver an item such as milk money, lunch, etc. during school hours, the school office will arrange for delivery to the child in his/her classroom.

ATTENDANCE: New York State Education Law requires daily attendance at school. Please make every effort to plan family vacations during school vacation periods so that academic instruction is not interrupted or missed.

ABSENCE FROM SCHOOL: Please call the school nurse at 821-8256 to report if your child will be absent from school. New York State law requires that the school also be informed in writing of the reason for a child's absence or tardiness. Please send a note with your child on the first day back to school after being absent or tardy. In case of contagious disease, please notify the school immediately.

CLASSROOM INTERRUPTIONS: In order to keep classroom interruptions to a minimum, we ask that you do not have your child dismissed before the end of the school day, except in case of emergency.

PARENT & EMERGENCY CONTACT NUMBERS: Please complete the enclosed blue card and yellow card and send one to school for each child on September 4. In addition, parents of children in grades 1-5 whose work number has changed should report the new number to the school office at 821-8254, as well as reporting it on the blue card.

Each family should discuss with their children a plan of action, in the event that the child arrives home and the parents are not there. This situation may arise due to inclement weather when we might have an emergency early dismissal. Please fill out the attached form and send it back to your child's classroom teacher by Friday, Sept. 5th.

LUNCH PERIODS: Lunch time for grades 1-3 is 11:30 a.m. until 12:15 p.m. Grades 4 and 5 is from 12:20 p.m. until 1:05 p.m., and includes an outdoor recreation time. During lunch time, children eat in their classroom and are supervised by monitors (one per class). Please refer to the enclosed information regarding purchase of milk and lunch. Children are encouraged to bring snacks to school if they wish. We recommend fresh or dried fruits, fresh vegetables, cheese or popcorn snacks; we do not recommend sweet, salted, or junk food snacks.

RECESS: Children go outdoors some part of each day during the school year (unless the wind/chill factor is below 15 F). Please make sure your child is dressed accordingly for the weather, including rainwear, hats, gloves and/or boots, when necessary.

SCHOOL BUS BEHAVIOR: Safe behavior and good citizenship are expected and required of all children at all times. Please review the following with your child(ren):
-obey the bus driver at all times;
-remain seated, and do not stand or walk in the aisles;
-keep the bus aisle clear at all times; keep arms, hands, and head inside the bus;
-do not crowd or push; only one person through the door at a time; be especially careful of younger, smaller children.

School bus drivers have been instructed to report children who disregard or abuse school bus safety procedures. Three such reports may result in suspension of bus riding privileges or other disciplinary action.

If you should have any questions about bus routes, please call First Student Bus Company at 744-2204.
